Modern Methods of Construction
Factory Visit

The K2 Construction Management team has witnessed first-hand the process for manufacturing the steel structural modules that will be used to build the new Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre (CASIC) at Royal Surrey County Hospital.
Bally Kalsi, Allan Lwanga, David Gardner plus Roberto Coladangelo and Chris Lawrence from Healthcare Partnership Limited, Nigel Mountjoy Royal Surrey Foundation Trust Head of Capital Projects joined MTX Contracts Ltd Director David Peacock and Senior Project Lead Gareth Roberts on a visit to one of the factories which manufactures the modules to precise structural engineering specifications laid down by MTX as the construction lead.

MTX employs advanced Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to deliver new facilities for NHS Trusts faster, greener, safer and more cost effectively, in line with the UK Government’s Construction Playbook, which also promotes Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles.
The use of steel structural modules is a proven element within MMC. It enables the manufacture of the modules while groundworks proceed to prepare the site for their arrival, when they will be craned onto the foundations to rapidly create a secure structure which can quickly be made weatherproof enabling fit out to take place. The on-site works are well underway with the modules planned to arrive on site in May 2025.

Elements of the mechanical and electrical equipment which the new building contains will also be created as modules enabling pre-assembly and testing within controlled factory conditions before they are delivered to site.
CASIC is a transformative project designed to bring state-of-the-art surgical facilities to Royal Surrey, significantly expanding the Trust’s surgical capacity. K2 Construction Management, under the leadership of Bally Kalsi, is proud to be delivering Project and Cost Management services for this cutting-edge facility, further reinforcing our commitment to excellence in the healthcare sector.

This £40m+ development, set for completion by summer 2026, will introduce six new operating theatres, enhancing Royal Surrey’s world-class expertise in both robotic and non-robotic surgery. The new facility will replace the hospital’s Surgical Short Stay Unit, with these modular units constructed off-site and seamlessly installed on-site.
K2 Construction Management is pleased to see the significant benefits that Modern Methods of Construction brings to projects such as these - faster completion, improved quality control, greater cost efficiency, reduced on-site disruption, and enhanced sustainability within the construction process. MMC is proving to be a transformative approach, aligning with the demands of modern healthcare projects and delivering outcomes that meet both operational and environmental objectives.
