Kathryn is a highly experienced professional with over 30 years’ experience of managing a wide range of projects from concept through to completion and close out. These projects cover a vast array of sectors for both public and private clients using a variety of procurement routes and contract forms. Many of these projects have been procured under public sector procurement frameworks and Kathryn was responsible for input into framework management, tendering and performance reporting.

What’s the proudest moment of your career?
I’m incredibly proud of every project I’ve been involved in, to the point where my family dread having to drive on any of “my” stretches of the A19.
My proudest personal moment was achieving my second chartership. I’m passionate about lifelong learning and love to keep challenging myself.
Do you have a favourite building?
The Pantheon in Rome – 2,000 years old and still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome. Standing under the oculus when it’s raining is magical. We definitely don’t build them like that anymore.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
Whilst I still love the ‘day job’, I’m now fortunate to be able to influence change across the industry as a board director of Constructing Excellence North East and volunteering with my local branch of National Associate of Women in Construction. I frequently speak at conferences, contribute to podcasts or host events around driving better value project outcomes. My most favourite part though is when I get to engage with the next generation to promote careers in construction – especially when there’s Lego involved!

What’s your best career advice?
Grasp every opportunity and don’t be afraid to try something new. In my 30+ years I’ve been a Quantity Surveyor, Risk Manager, Project Manager and Programme Manager and worked in most sectors. It’s absolutely been the key to my progression, and having such a broad spectrum of experience means I can bring a fresh perspective to any situation. It’s also the reason I’m as interested and passionate about the industry as when I started.

Flashback to when you were 10 years old. What do you want to be when you grow up?
An archaeologist – and I still do (not sure my knees or back are as keen anymore though)
What characteristics and skills do you look for in people?
Skills can be learnt, but adaptability and curiosity are important characteristics in a dynamic industry like ours. I admire people that are willing to flex, think creatively and always looking to build their knowledge. And a good sense of humour – a team that can laugh together will keep each other going through the tougher times.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?
I make and sell my own jewellery
What’s your personal philosophy?
Everything happens for a reason - accept it, learn from it then move on.
