What do you enjoy most about the industry?

The diversity of people, projects and experiences. I don’t believe there is another industry that gives you the opportunity to meet new people, get involved in projects across such a range of sectors or even countries, and be checking a programme one minute and the next talking to schoolchildren about the industry as part of our corporate social responsibility.

What’s your best career advice?

Enjoy it! I am a strong believer that you should enjoy your work to give your best. If you don’t enjoy it, then change path. It’s in your hands.

What are your passions outside of work?

Simply my family. During my early career I my focus was very much on my career and as such I missed out a lot with my children particularly the school years. Quality time with my wife, children, grandchildren and I suppose even the dog is very important to me now. That said I also like going on holiday. We bought a motorhome last year and I am really looking forward to trips away this year.

What characteristics and skills do you look for in people?

I believe it is important that a successful team has a diverse set of skills and capabilities. It is also important to make sure that the diversity doesn’t cause conflict and disruption. Therefore, I will also look for people who will improve and add to the team.

How did you get into construction?

My Dad was a Quantity Surveyor / Planner for a construction company. During the summer holidays he used to take me to different sites, and I loved watching how buildings were constructed. I still find that today I am fascinated walking around and watching. Unfortunately, I don’t do enough of it now a days.

What’s your personal philosophy?

I have three key cornerstones

  1. Lead from the front and never ask people to do what you wouldn’t.

  2. Support my team and fight for what is right.

  3. Show your team you trust them first and they will come to trust you.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I do jigsaws to relax. I can easily lose 3 hours on a jigsaw at a time.

What do you think your future holds?

Retirement and driving around in my motorhome.

However, before I get to that I want to leave a legacy in terms of a sustainable business set on the right foundations that creates the right opportunities for the teams in both London and the North East.
