What’s the proudest moment of your career?
Each project is an expedition and there are pinch points along the way. These points require discussion, comprehension, negotiation and realisation – it is the process of this journey that provides the greatest satisfaction and can therefore be termed as a recurrent “proudest moment”.
Do you have a favourite building?
I am inspired and encouraged by the Architecture of Santiago Calatrava. The quote that encapsulates his approach is “The architect is very interesting because the architect is the commander, meaning the one who commands all the workers. The architect is also the music director and composer. He cannot play each instrument, but he needs to understand and embody the sense of each part.”

What characteristics and skills do you look for in people?
An ability to comprehend the “other” and be reflective in practice.
What’s your best career advice?
“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." Mike Tyson
On a daily basis we need to discern the “must do” from the “the nice to have”.
What are your passions outside of work?
Study, experience and the navigation of an understanding of the drivers of human action.

Do you have a favourite album, book or film?
The Machine That Changed the World (1990 ) which is about automobile production, written by James P. Womack, Daniel T. Jones, and Daniel Roos. Concepts of lean production, zero defects and efficiency in design and performance.
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (1995) by Japanese author Haruki Murakami. Not an avid fiction reader, but it’s the single book which whilst I was reading it, the storyline weaved its way into my lived experience from vivid dreams, a burning passion to read the book from end-to-end and a complete disconnect from reality.

What advice would you give to someone looking to get into what you do?
Research the role that you are interested in, contact Professionals in the industry, to ask them what their motivations are, what as their likes & dislikes and how their current role impacts the outcome of a project. Who are your inspirations?
Nelson Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) - South African anti-apartheid activist, politician, and statesman who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. The quotation that captures the lived life of Nelson Mandela is “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
